Teatro Fontalba
The House of Bernarda AlbaTeatro Fontalba was a Madrid venue closely associated with the early success of Federico García Lorca’s Mariana Pineda: the play opened there on 12 October 1927 and was enthusiastically received after its Barcelona premiere earlier that year.

The production followed the play’s premiere at the Teatro Goya in Barcelona on 24 June 1927. There, Margarita Xirgu played the heroine, and Salvador Dalí designed the sets. The Barcelona engagement lasted only six performances because Xirgu’s company ended its season on 28 June, but critics responded warmly. When the production reached Teatro Fontalba that autumn, it was again received with enthusiasm.
Reception and theatrical style
Contemporary reviews of the Madrid production stressed the poetic quality of Lorca’s treatment of a historical subject already familiar to Spanish audiences, as well as the production’s stylisation through its sets and costumes. The reception at Teatro Fontalba therefore extended the play’s favorable critical response from Barcelona and made visible an approach to historical drama that joined recognizable subject matter with poetic theatrical design.
Place in Lorca’s theatrical history
The Madrid opening at Teatro Fontalba formed part of a successful year for the play: in 1927 Lorca also exhibited drawings in Barcelona and published his second volume of poems, Songs. The later production history recorded the play’s continued movement between Spanish cities, but the Teatro Fontalba engagement stands as an early instance of its reception outside Barcelona and of the public welcome given to Lorca’s poetic theatre.
